HO CHI MINH CITY CONSERVATORY
HCM City Conservatory is a leading arts training institution of Vietnam, established in 1956 under the name of Saigon National School of Music and Drama. Over the last 60 years, Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory has trained and provided the society with songwriters, music educators, rationale researchers, and well-known performing artists for Ho Chi Minh City as well as the whole country. Generations of the conservatory’s teachers and students have made an effective contribution to the development in the field of social arts and culture, which is recognized by the government and music admirers.
Vietnam was the host nation for ASEAN summit in 2010 and with their assistance, the Orchestra was founded. After fruitful discussion amongst the core members of ASEAN and with the support from the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, we have developed a new set of objectives for the future progress of the Saigon Philharmonic Orchestra As a community project, self-funded orchestra. SPO as the self-governed conservatory is supporting facilities and personnel. From 2015 through 2020, HCM City Conservatory develops the direction to train artists of orchestral subjects with a focus on group-working skills. Therefore, teaching-learning and practice activities are closely related to the operation of symphony orchestras and chamber music groups. In addition to training of human resources for arts, we hope to use these very resources to contribute to building aesthetics for the community through non-profit performances for children and schools in the area. This activity is both an opportunity for students to practice and a contribution to bringing music to a wider audience more broadly and directly.
Currently, HCM City Conservatory is training nearly 2,000 students from vocational to Ph.D. levels in European classical and national ethnic music subjects. European classical music subjects, especially those of symphonic instruments are facing more difficulties in every aspect, from student admissions to education meeting international standards due to inadequate conditions for teaching and learning. The greatest difficulties are the shortage of qualified teachers, lack of orchestra conductors, leading artists rich in performance experience... Even more so, teachers and students of the conservatory lack the opportunity to learn, exchange, and train overseas. In the trend of rapid world integration today, the Conservatory is short of the financial ability to support teachers’ study to improve their skill as well as student’s access to the rich knowledge resources of the world.
Due to these practical difficulties and direction for 2020-2025, we very much appreciate and welcome the support and cooperation from arts institutions, culture and education funds and enterprises so that generations of performing artists of HCM City have more opportunities to promptly integrate into the music industry regionally and internationally.
We look forward to receiving assistance under the following categories:
Funding for education and arts performing to serve different classes of audience.
Sending artists from overseas to work long-term in HCM City.
Opportunities to perform, exchange, and train overseas.
The support for classical music will not only bring huge cultural and spiritual benefits to the community but also define the high class of the sponsors. Once again, we would like to deeply thank you for the concern and sympathy for HCM City Conservatory. Hopefully, we can together contribute to a better future of the country in general and the music industry in particular.
